Down South The Younger Years

I Remember my younger days growing up in the south, out in the country on a dirt road. The home we lived in was Front Room, Back Room, and Upstairs, or you could say Living Room, Kitchen, and Attic.I can Remember going to bed at night and crawling under as many blankets as i could find and laying real still until i got warm enough to go to sleep.

When it would snow which is not very often, it would blow through the cracks, the attic was not finished and all that

wasbetween me and the outside was the Weather Boarding , and in the morning when i would wake up there would be Snow on the Floor, the house on the right is very simulair to the one we lived in, the Chimney on the Photo is made of brick, ours was made from rocks and was on the side showing in the photo.
My older Brother would Trap in the winter Months to sell the hides, and the carcasses would provide food, he would sell Mink, Possum, Muskrat, Racoon, and anything else he could sell, he would take the hides and dry them out on special boards, and ship them off to a fur factory, and they would send a check for what they were worth. This one day i really wanted to go with him to run the traps, he told me No! he didn’t have time to watch me, i went on begging and finally my dad told him to take me and only then did he reluctantly agreed to take me.We went up the creek and checked all the Traps, and he was trying to run off and leave me all the way, and told me i should have stayed home, then we went way up through the woods on the hills and came across some persimmons and he told me to eat one of them, they were really good.

And i thought to myself he is telling me that so i will eat it and afterwards it will make me sick or something, so i told him to eat one first and he took one and ate it and told me only eat the soft ones, they are ripe and the hard ones will not hurt you but they taste horible so i ate one, then another, and another, and they were very good, the flavor was like a soft cool breeze on a hot summer Day.
We went on around and down the hill folowing a Ditch, and checking the traps as we went, i had a good feeling now because

he was not trying to run off and leave me anymore and was acting like he did not really mind me being there. We got to the very bottom of the that hill and up on a nole in a trap was a Skunk, he went around in front of it and grabed it by the head with one hand and with the other pushed his tail down, and told me to get down on my hands and knees and see if i could see where the scent came from, he said he had tried to figure it out for a long time and he jest couldn’t because he could never hold the Skunk and check the scent at the same time.I told him i was scared and thought it may hurt me, he told me naw it will not hurt and i will be holding him all the time, I thought well he was right about the persimmons maybe he is right about this also.He said hurry up now i cant hold him for long so i got down on my handa and knees and started staring at the rear end of that skunk, and he said when you are ready tell me, so i said i am ready and he raised that skunks tail up and that Spray came out and hit me right in the Eyes.Talk about something Hurting and Burning that was it, i could not see and was

The last thing i saw for a while

crying and screaming and the stink was all over me.I don’t know how long it took for the burn to stop in my eyes but it seemed like a month, and when i could finally see i made my way home. The first thing that was said to me was to go outside and throw them clothes away and put on more, and i was trying to tell them what had happened, and when i finally got back in the house they told me i still stunk and what was wrong, so i told them what  my brother had done, and i could see both of them could hardly hold back the Laughfter as they were telling me to go to the Creek and take a Bath.

I don’t remember how long it took to get that swell off me but i remember the next day and also a few days latter i could still smell it.

Needless to say i never again begged to go with him anywhere.
